Actor Kim Sung Oh shocked viewers after revealing the dangerous side effects he suffered from extreme dieting for a role.
On July 14, a new video was uploaded to the YouTube channel Kim Sook TV, featuring actors Kim Sung Oh and Im Hyung Joon as guests. The two talked about the physical demands of acting and how they changed their bodies for different roles.
During the chat, Im Hyung Joon brought up Kim Sung Oh’s drastic weight loss for the movie Missing You, asking, “Didn’t you lose a lot of weight back then?”
Kim Sung Oh admitted, “At that time, I was 181 cm tall and weighed only 56 kg,” surprising everyone with how underweight he had become.

Im Hyung Joon remembered how shocking his appearance was in the film. “You looked really scary on screen,” he said. A flashback clip showed Kim’s extremely thin frame, leaving everyone speechless.
Kim Sook reacted with concern, saying, “Can you even act when you’re that skinny? I feel like you’d lose your memory or become too sensitive.”
Kim Sung Oh shared, “It wasn’t like that, but something strange did happen—my voice started echoing whenever I spoke.”

He explained that he ended up searching his symptoms online before going to the ENT (ear, nose, and throat) clinic. “As soon as I sat down, the doctor asked, ‘Did you recently lose a lot of weight suddenly?’” he recalled.
The doctor explained that even the fat around the eustachian tube in his ear had disappeared, causing it to loosen and mess with his hearing. “They told me there’s no medicine for it. I just had to eat well again and wait about a week for it to return to normal,” Kim said.
Fans were shocked by how far he went for a role and praised his dedication, but many also shared concerns over the health risks of extreme dieting.
