Actor Lee Jong Gu’s wife opened up about her painful past and the abuse she suffered since childhood.
On the March 10 episode of MBC’s Oh Eun Young Report – Marriage Hell, a couple who divorced 20 years ago but remarried two years ago appeared on the show. The guests were actor Lee Jong Gu, who recently gained attention for his role in the hit film Exhuma, and his wife.
During the session, Dr. Oh Eun Young pointed out, “The wife has deep-seated anxiety. She is warm-hearted and enjoys being around people, but in her relationship, even minor triggers feel like attacks to her.”

She then asked, “Why is the wife so fearful? It seems like she struggles to handle situations where the other person’s attitude is intimidating or commanding.”
That’s when the wife made a heartbreaking confession.
She hesitated before saying, “I wouldn’t go as far as to call it violence, but when I was young, my older brother had the mindset that ‘women need to be beaten.’ The wooden broom he used was freshly cut, so it hurt a lot.”
Her words shocked everyone.
She continued, “My mother wouldn’t stop him—she would just leave. That made me resent her. Instead of intervening, she just walked away. Maybe she thought my brother was ‘educating’ me. I hated her for that.”
The wife then revealed another painful memory: “She even threw stones at me, telling me not to follow her to the market.”
She went on to recall an incident before her wedding, saying, “I went to discuss my wedding with my brother, and he asked, ‘Are you still seeing that guy?’ I told him I was getting married. Since my parents couldn’t help with the wedding preparations, I said, ‘I guess I have no luck when it comes to parents.’”
But instead of support, she received violence. “Then he beat me with a broom. That pain still lingers inside me.”
Her confession left the studio in stunned silence, highlighting the deep scars from her past.
