Actor Kim Young Kwang has revealed why he has been taking on romantic comedy roles one after another, admitting that he wants to make the most of these opportunities before they become harder to find as he gets older.
On October 7, Kim Young Kwang appeared on the YouTube channel YouTube Ha Ji Young, where he talked about his busy acting schedule, upcoming projects, and his thoughts on continuing to play romantic leads.
During the conversation, host Ha Ji Young brought up his upcoming Netflix series Take Charge of My Heart, which is scheduled to premiere on October 9 at 5 PM KST.
Kim Young Kwang confirmed that the new series is another romantic comedy, prompting Ha Ji Young to jokingly ask whether he was determined to establish himself as the ultimate romantic comedy king.
However, the actor gave a surprisingly practical answer.
"It's not really that. I just think that as I get a little older, these kinds of offers might stop coming in," he explained.
His response offered a humorous but realistic look at how he approaches his acting career.
When Ha Ji Young suggested that he could explore more intense romance dramas instead, Kim Young Kwang explained that he was not particularly focused on becoming known for a specific type of role.
"I'm not someone who has huge ambitions like that. I just think romantic comedies are something I should do while I still can, because those offers might not come as I get older," he said.
The actor's comments revealed that his recent romantic comedy projects are not necessarily part of a plan to become a romance specialist. Instead, he wants to enjoy playing these characters while the opportunities are available.
Kim Young Kwang also shared that he had originally planned to take a break from acting this year after maintaining a busy schedule for several years.
He explained that he had barely taken time off in the past four to five years and initially wanted to focus on promoting his completed projects before finally resting.
However, another acting opportunity came along, changing his plans.
The actor is now preparing to begin filming his next drama, Queen of Training, which will also feature him in a romantic comedy role.
He revealed that he has been adjusting his lifestyle and losing weight to prepare for the project.
"We're starting filming soon. The director wanted me to look slimmer, so I lost some weight," he shared.
Kim Young Kwang also mentioned that he has been drinking less alcohol as part of his preparations.
Despite his original plans to take a break, the actor appears determined to continue working while interesting roles are available.
His lighthearted explanation about choosing romantic comedies offered a relatable perspective on getting older and making the most of career opportunities.
For now, Kim Young Kwang is continuing his streak of romantic roles, with Take Charge of My Heart set to premiere on Netflix on October 9.
