BTS’s Jimin has unexpectedly become the inspiration for an illustration explaining the meaning of the word “parasocial.”
Spanish-language visual media outlet Pictoline recently created an infographic highlighting some of the new words added to Merriam-Webster.
One of the terms featured was “parasocial,” which describes a one-sided emotional connection someone may feel toward a public figure or person they have never actually met.
To explain the concept, Pictoline used an illustration of a fan appearing to marry a celebrity-inspired character. The character featured long blond hair and wore a black jacket with “JIMIN” written on the back, making the reference to the BTS member clear.
The accompanying explanation read, “That connection you feel with a celebrity, even though they don’t know you exist.”
The playful illustration used Jimin as an easily recognizable example of the relationship that can develop between celebrities and their fans, particularly when fans feel personally connected to someone they mainly know through music, performances, interviews, or social media.
The example also reflects a familiar part of fan culture. Images and life-size cutouts of celebrities, including Jimin, have previously appeared at fan celebrations and other special events.
Jimin’s unexpected appearance in the educational infographic attracted attention as another example of how BTS members have become recognizable references in global pop culture beyond music.
Meanwhile, BTS is continuing its WORLD TOUR ARIRANG, with the group scheduled to begin the South American leg of the tour in Bogotá on October 2.
