Son Ye Jin has revealed that CGI was used in Netflix’s The Scandal to recreate a younger version of herself inspired by her appearance in The Classic.
The actress shared the behind-the-scenes detail during a Netflix Korea video with co-stars Ji Chang Wook and Nana.
During the conversation, Son Ye Jin was asked about scenes showing the characters Jo Won and Lady Cho when they were younger.
She explained, “The faces from our younger years were created with CGI.”
Nana responded with surprise, saying, “I didn’t know that either.”
Ji Chang Wook further explained that de-aging technology was used for scenes set during their characters’ younger years.
“There are scenes from their teenage years, and they used some de-aging to create younger versions of us,” he said.
Son Ye Jin revealed that the production team went a step further by using her actual appearance from her twenties as a reference.
“For example, they tried to make it look close to how I appeared in a project I did in my twenties, like The Classic,” she explained.
The result even surprised Son Ye Jin herself.
She added, “I thought, ‘It really looks like me in my twenties.’ It was fascinating.”
Released on September 18, The Scandal stars Son Ye Jin as Lady Cho alongside Ji Chang Wook as Jo Won and Nana as Hee Yeon.
The series is set during the Joseon era and centers on a dangerous romantic wager involving the three characters. It is based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic French novel Dangerous Liaisons, which also inspired the 2003 Korean film Untold Scandal.
The CGI detail offers a closer look at how The Scandal recreated its characters’ younger years while connecting Son Ye Jin’s appearance to one of her best-known early films.
