Ji Chang Wook has teased the strong tension viewers can expect between him and Son Ye Jin in Netflix's The Scandal.
In a recent interview with Elle Korea, Ji Chang Wook spoke about working with Son Ye Jin and described their scenes together as consistently intense.
Son Ye Jin plays Lady Cho, while Ji Chang Wook takes on the role of Jo Won, a skilled romantic known for his complicated personality.
Speaking about their on-screen dynamic, Ji Chang Wook said, “There isn't a single scene where Lady Cho and Jo Won meet that doesn't feel suffocating. Every moment is completely packed.”
He explained that the two actors spent a great deal of time rehearsing their scenes so that the tension between their characters would come across naturally.
Ji Chang Wook added, “We always put a lot of effort into rehearsals, and I think viewers will be able to fully feel the carefully expressed tension between the two even through the screen.”
The actor also shared how he approached Jo Won, saying he did not want to exaggerate the character's reputation as a romantic.
He explained, “I tried not to deliberately emphasize or add to his image as a great lover. I wanted it to naturally come through in his attitude and actions.”
Ji Chang Wook described Jo Won as a difficult character to read, which made the role both interesting and challenging.
“Jo Won is a complicated and difficult man. You can't easily tell what he's thinking until the end, so he was fun to portray, but there were also difficult parts,” he said.
He added that he worked closely with director Jung Ji Woo to shape the character.
While The Scandal features a larger story filled with complicated relationships, Ji Chang Wook's comments suggest that the tense exchanges between Jo Won and Lady Cho will be one of the drama's key attractions.
With Ji Chang Wook and Son Ye Jin bringing two complex characters together, viewers can expect their chemistry to be driven less by light romance and more by carefully built tension throughout the series.
