Seo Kang Joon is raising expectations for his upcoming romance drama A Love Other Than Yours after opening up about his chemistry with co-star Ahn Eun Jin.
The new KBS 2TV weekend drama follows a couple who have been together for 10 years but begin facing unfamiliar emotions as their long relationship changes.
Seo Kang Joon plays Nam Goong Ho, a devoted boyfriend who has spent a decade imagining a future with Lee Mi Do, played by Ahn Eun Jin.
Speaking ahead of the drama’s September 12 premiere, Seo Kang Joon said working with Ahn Eun Jin felt surprisingly comfortable from the start.
He explained, “The phrase ‘we just understood each other’ comes to mind first.”
According to the actor, the two focused on creating the natural familiarity of a longtime couple rather than making every romantic moment feel dramatic.
“We talked a lot about showing the comfort of people who have been together for a long time and can understand each other without saying much,” he said.
Seo Kang Joon added that their interpretations also matched closely during more emotional scenes.
“Even in scenes that needed deeper emotions, our interpretations matched surprisingly well. I felt supported and happy every time we acted together,” he shared.
The actor said he was also drawn to the drama because its story feels close to real life. Rather than presenting an idealized romance, A Love Other Than Yours explores emotions such as jealousy, boredom, sacrifice, understanding, and the complicated feelings that can develop in a long-term relationship.
Seo Kang Joon described his character as someone willing to make sacrifices for the person he loves. He explained that Nam Goong Ho works, saves money, and accepts some of life’s frustrations because he is focused on building a future with Mi Do.
For his performance, Seo Kang Joon said he tried to avoid exaggerated expressions and instead show the character’s thoughts through smaller details.
“I hoped Nam Goong Ho’s deep thoughts and worries could be seen through his eyes rather than through big expressions,” he explained.
He also believes viewers who have experienced love will be able to relate to the drama’s emotional conflicts.
“The deep history of a long-term couple, even as they struggle with familiarity and boredom, will touch viewers and make them want to support them,” he said.
A Love Other Than Yours marks Seo Kang Joon’s return to television drama following the Netflix series Boyfriend on Demand. For Ahn Eun Jin, it is her next drama after Dynamite Kiss.
A Love Other Than Yours premieres September 12 at 9:20 p.m. KST on KBS 2TV and is also scheduled to stream globally through Amazon Prime Video.
