The growing popularity of MBC’s A Bona fide Killer is also giving its original Kakao webtoon a major boost.
According to Kakao Entertainment, views for the original A Bona fide Killer webtoon on KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon increased by around 10 times after the drama began airing.
The comparison was based on webtoon views recorded from July 20 to July 26 before the broadcast and from August 3 to August 9 after the drama premiered.
The sharp increase comes as the television adaptation continues attracting viewers with its action-focused story and the chemistry between leads Gong Hyo Jin and Jung Joon Won.
Promotions launched through KakaoPage and other Kakao platforms alongside the drama’s release are also believed to have helped introduce the original series to more readers.
The webtoon’s story writer YOON praised the production team for preserving details from the source material.
YOON said, “I was impressed by the details in the drama that were exactly like the original. I’m grateful to the production team and actors for working hard to bring the original work to life.”
The writer particularly highlighted the action sequences, adding, “What I looked forward to most in the adaptation was Bona’s action scenes. It was exciting to see dynamic moments that were difficult to fully express through drawings.”
YOON also encouraged audiences to enjoy comparing the two versions, saying, “I think it will also be fun to find the differences between the original and the drama.”
Illustrator Geomdung shared similar appreciation for the renewed interest in the webtoon.
The artist said, “I feel nervous but also grateful that many new readers have discovered the work because of the drama.”
Geomdung added that the cast gave the original characters their own personalities while still maintaining recognizable details from the webtoon.
The original A Bona fide Killer webtoon began serialization in May 2020 and has accumulated approximately 190 million views. The series follows a highly capable professional killer who shows a very different side of herself at home, using its unusual premise to explore family life and the experiences of married women.
With both the drama and its source material gaining momentum, A Bona fide Killer is showing how a successful television adaptation can bring major new attention to an already established webtoon.
