The mother of sisters Lee Chaeyeon and ITZY’s Chaeryeong has revealed that she has been diagnosed with cancer, prompting an outpouring of support from fans.
On August 15, their mother, Choi Sun Young, shared an update on social media about her health and recovery.
She wrote, “I heard I need to eat well, so I think I’ve eaten every kind of meat for a week,” before explaining that she has been staying connected with her family through their shared daily updates.
She then revealed her diagnosis, writing, “I am now officially recognized as a cancer patient. I’m going to the hospital next week, and I don’t know yet what treatment I will receive. Until then, I’m going to take good care of my strength, smile more, stay positive, and gain some weight. I’m grateful every day.”
Her previous posts showed that she had already been receiving medical care. In June, she shared that she was preparing for surgery, and in July, she posted from the hospital before the procedure.
After being discharged, she thanked her family for staying by her side.
She wrote, “I’ve been discharged and I’m recovering well. Thank you to my daughters and husband who stayed beside me every day, and to everyone who hoped and prayed for my recovery.”
Lee Chaeyeon had also previously mentioned caring for her mother through her YouTube channel.
Attention has now returned to an emotional moment involving Chaeryeong at ITZY’s fifth fan meeting, ITZY, MIDZY, Let’s Fly! “ALL IN, MIDZY”, held on August 8.
During the event, Chaeryeong spotted her mother in the audience, held her hand, and became visibly emotional before the two shared a hug. Her mother was also seen crying.
At the time, the specific reason behind the emotional moment was not publicly explained. Following Choi Sun Young’s health update, fans have revisited the scene while sending messages of support to the family.
Lee Chaeyeon and Chaeryeong also showed support for their mother’s post, while fans left messages wishing her strength and recovery.
For now, Choi Sun Young has said she is focusing on rebuilding her strength and maintaining a positive mindset while waiting to learn more about her next stage of treatment.
