Shin Ye Eun and director Lee Myung Woo shared the surprising story behind her casting in ENA’s upcoming drama “Doctor on the Edge”.
On May 26, the production presentation for the new Monday Tuesday drama was held in Seoul, where Shin Ye Eun, Lee Jae Wook, and the production team introduced the series.
“Doctor on the Edge” is a medical human romance about Do Ji Ui, a public health doctor played by Lee Jae Wook, who arrives on the feared island of Pyeon Dong Island, and Yook Ha Ri, a mysterious nurse played by Shin Ye Eun.
During the event, Shin Ye Eun revealed that she had wanted to work with director Lee Myung Woo for years. She said she first met him at an audition when she was still a rookie, but did not get the role.
She shared, “I met the director at my first audition when I was a rookie. After I failed the audition, I promised myself, ‘I will appear in that director’s work.’”
The director also remembered their first meeting and explained that he had hesitated back then because Shin Ye Eun looked prettier than the character he had in mind.
He said, “I clearly remember the bright and lovely feeling I had when I first saw actress Shin Ye Eun. In my view, actress Shin Ye Eun was prettier than the character at that time. So I hesitated.”
Lee Myung Woo added that he had a similar concern while casting her for “Doctor on the Edge”. Although he recognized Shin Ye Eun’s stable acting and her ability to play both good and darker characters, he said he still wondered if she was too pretty for Yook Ha Ri, a character he imagined as more simple and easygoing.
However, the director said Shin Ye Eun’s natural brightness, innocence, and pure energy made him believe she was right for the role. He explained that Yook Ha Ri has many emotional changes, and he needed an actress who could express the character’s pain without making the story feel too heavy.
He added that after meeting Shin Ye Eun again, he felt she only needed to show her natural self, and he tried to bring out that side of her on set.
“Doctor on the Edge” is set to premiere on ENA on June 1 at 10 PM.
