Kim Jae Won opened up about why Yumi’s final love in “Yumi’s Cells 3” became Shin Soon Rok.
TVING’s “Yumi’s Cells Season 3” ended on May 4 with Yumi and Soon Rok’s wedding, giving the story a warm and happy finish. The 8 episode season followed Yumi, played by Kim Go Eun, after she became a successful writer and met rookie PD Shin Soon Rok, played by Kim Jae Won.
The drama also showed strong results after its return. “Yumi’s Cells 3” ranked No. 1 in weekly paid subscriber contribution on TVING for 4 weeks in a row.
It also ranked No. 1 for 2 straight weeks on Rakuten Viki in regions including the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania, while also placing No. 3 on Disney Plus Japan for 2 weeks.
In a recent interview, Kim Jae Won said many people ask why Yumi ended up marrying Soon Rok instead of Goo Woong or Yoo Babi. He shared, “I also thought a lot about that reason”, and explained that Soon Rok’s biggest charm is how he moves forward once he becomes sure of his heart.
He said, “Just like his One Way General cell decides, ‘I love Yumi. I will protect only this woman,’ I think Soon Rok was able to reach marriage because of his charm of going straight toward Yumi.” He added that when Yumi sees Soon Rok getting off the train and smiling, it feels like “a love that struck like lightning”.
Kim Jae Won also talked about building Soon Rok’s character. He said his real personality is different from Soon Rok because he enjoys going outside and staying active.
To show Soon Rok’s colder work side, he styled him with his forehead showing and horn rimmed glasses. At home, he let the character’s hair down and used a more relaxed look.
He explained that the hardest part was making Soon Rok romantic without making him look too cheesy. Kim Jae Won said, “Cheesiness and heart fluttering feelings are only a fine line apart,” adding that he tried to keep his expressions simple and clean because the cells already showed many emotions.
The actor also shared that working with Kim Go Eun helped him grow. He said he learned not only about acting, but also about the attitude and responsibility of a lead actor. He explained, “Even if it is hard while acting on set, I should not show it,” and said a lead actor should give strength to the whole team.
Kim Jae Won also said he wants to keep his rookie mindset even as his career grows. He shared, “The big principle I have in life is, ‘Let’s do our best.’” He added that he wants to become an actor who never loses his beginner’s heart and remains thankful for his work.
He ended by saying his acting still has “a very long way to go”, but he hopes to keep working hard until he can get closer to the top.
