Gong Seung Yeon is drawing attention for her intense acting in MBC’s Friday Saturday drama 'Perfect Crown'.

In episodes 9 and 10, which aired on May 8 and 9, the royal family was thrown into chaos after the contract marriage between Grand Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo seok, and Sung Hee joo, played by IU, was exposed. At the same time, the truth about the late king Lee Hwan’s royal order began to come to light.

At the center of the tension was Queen Dowager Yoon Yi rang, played by Gong Seung Yeon. She immediately called the royal clan council after learning about Ian and Hee joo’s contract marriage and strongly pushed the two into a corner.

Yoon Yi rang had long kept her guard up against Grand Prince Ian in order to protect her son Yoon’s place on the throne. However, the sudden reveal of the late king’s order and the truth behind a past fire incident shook her deeply.

The cruel truth that her own choices to protect her son may have ended up hurting him made Yoon Yi rang fall apart. Her meeting with her father Yoon Sung won also revealed old wounds and complicated feelings toward Grand Prince Ian, raising the tension of the story.

Gong Seung Yeon showed strong screen presence as she portrayed Yoon Yi rang’s painful emotions. She moved between the cold dignity of a queen dowager and the broken heart of a mother who had been carrying deep scars for a long time.

In the scene where she questioned Grand Prince Ian and his wife for damaging the royal family’s authority, Gong Seung Yeon led the mood with a cold gaze and controlled tone. When Yoon Sung won suspected her over the late king’s royal order, she expressed Yoon Yi rang’s emotions with restrained breathing and quiet intensity.

The most memorable moment came when Yoon Yi rang cried while holding her son Yoon. Gong Seung Yeon made viewers feel the pressure her character had endured alone, as well as the sadness of realizing that her sacrifices for the throne had wounded the person she wanted to protect most.

The drama also showed Yoon Yi rang’s past during her royal school days, when she had to hide her feelings for Grand Prince Ian and become the crown princess. This story added more depth to her current cold image.

Her small signs of anxiety while facing Prime Minister Min Jung woo, played by Noh Sang hyun, and her subtle concern for Sung Hee joo also showed that Yoon Yi rang is not a simple villain, but a character with a complex story.

At the end of the broadcast, Yoon Yi rang’s next move was hinted at, signaling another storm ahead. With only two episodes left until the finale, viewers are now watching closely to see what final choice she will make to protect her son’s place.

'Perfect Crown' airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 PM on MBC.
