Kim Jae Won opened up about working with Kim Go Eun in ‘Yumi’s Cells Season 3’ and shared that the drama became a special learning experience for him.
During a recent interview, Kim Jae Won talked about the love he has received since appearing in the TVING series. He said, “I appeared in a project that received a lot of love, and I also received a lot of love myself”.
He added that more people now recognize him in public, saying, “Many people recognize me when they see me on the street. I feel thankful that I am receiving love.”
In ‘Yumi’s Cells Season 3’, Kim Jae Won plays Soon Rok, a calm and logical publishing company PD who slowly changes after meeting Yumi, played by Kim Go Eun. As a younger man who goes straight toward Yumi, Soon Rok won viewers over with his honest and steady charm.
Kim Jae Won admitted that joining such a popular series came with pressure. He shared, “Yumi’s Cells is a work with a huge IP, and seasons 1 and 2 also received a lot of attention.”
He said his bigger worry was not about the popularity of season 3, but whether he could do well after Ahn Bo Hyun and Park Jin Young’s performances in the earlier seasons. He added, “My goal was to do well so I would not cause harm.”
The actor also said he felt pressure because Soon Rok was seen as a “unicorn like” character. He explained, “When I saw the script, I thought, ‘A big opportunity has come to me.’ I was happy that I could play a unicorn like character. I studied the role because I really wanted to express him well.”
When asked about Soon Rok’s biggest charm, Kim Jae Won chose his direct way of loving. He said, “After deciding to give his all to this person, the way he runs straight only for Yumi without weighing anything is very Soon Rok like.” He added that although Soon Rok is younger, he also has strong and bold moments.
Kim Jae Won also honestly addressed the 10 year age gap between him and Kim Go Eun. He said, “I have no thoughts about the age difference”.
He explained that Soon Rok is also shown as a younger man in the original story, but the age gap was never treated as a problem in the drama. He said he focused more on how to act as Soon Rok on set.
The actor praised Kim Go Eun and said their scenes together helped him a lot. He shared, “I was so happy. It was a continuous learning experience.” He added, “I am a rookie actor without much experience, but the director and Kim Go Eun are both true veterans.”
Kim Jae Won said Kim Go Eun helped him stay focused during filming, explaining that they talked a lot about scenes and that her support made him feel secure. He said, “Going to the set every time felt like a continuous learning experience, and it felt like a dream.”
He also shared how Kim Go Eun helped him become more immersed in his role. Kim Jae Won said, “When I looked at Yumi’s eyes across from me, I could feel the emotions completely. Even without words, there was power in the silence”.
He added that looking into Yumi’s eyes helped him understand what Soon Rok needed to do in each moment.
Kim Jae Won continued to express his respect for Kim Go Eun, saying, “I think acting that comes from a truthful moment is precious.” He said he admired the way small emotions, eye movements, and subtle trembling could feel real, adding, “I felt, ‘I want to become an actor like this too’”.
As ‘Yumi’s Cells Season 3’ ended with Yumi and Soon Rok becoming each other’s final love, Kim Jae Won said he felt honored by his character’s ending.
He shared, “They also get married in the original work”, and admitted he was curious when he first received the script. He added, “I actually liked that they got married. It is an honor to become her final man”.
All eight episodes of TVING’s ‘Yumi’s Cells Season 3’ have now been released.
