Kim Dong Kyu is gaining attention for his role in Coupang Play’s teen comedy series “Absolute Value of Romance.”
In the drama, Kim Dong Kyu plays Yoon Dong Joo, a warm and kind Korean language teacher at Murim Girls’ High School. The character stands out for his gentle personality and calm way of handling the people around him.
Yoon Dong Joo is loved not only by his students, but also by his roommates and fellow teachers, including Ga Woo Su, played by Cha Hak Yeon, No Da Ju, played by Kim Jae Hyun, and Jung Ki Jeon, played by Son Jung Hyuk. Whenever tension rises between characters, Yoon Dong Joo often catches attention with his soft and flexible response.
Kim Dong Kyu also shows another side of the character inside the web novel “We Were Friends,” written by Yeo Eui Ju, played by Kim Hyang Gi. In the novel world, he appears as Choi Yoon, a key character in the love triangle. With different styling and a softer, emotional image, he adds both humor and interest to the story.

Through this role, Kim Dong Kyu is showing a layered performance as he moves between the real world and the novel world. His sincere lines and warm gaze help make Yoon Dong Joo’s charm stand out, while his two sided portrayal adds more depth to the character.
Episode 7 also raised curiosity about Yoon Dong Joo’s hidden story after he was brought up as a condition during a tense conversation between Ga Woo Su and the principal.
“Absolute Value of Romance” marks Kim Dong Kyu’s first lead role. The series follows a high school girl who writes a romance novel about handsome teachers, only to face unexpected moments with them in real life. New episodes are released every Friday at 8 PM on Coupang Play.
