“Salmokji: Whispering Water” has reached a major box office milestone in Korea.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network, the horror film surpassed 2.69 million cumulative viewers as of May 4. With this record, “Salmokji: Whispering Water” has passed the 2018 hit “Gonjiam” and is now the No. 2 highest grossing horror film in Korean box office history.
The film follows a filming team that heads to a reservoir after a mysterious figure appears in a road view image.

There, they encounter something hidden in the dark water, creating an experience based horror story that has drawn strong interest from viewers.
Its success is being seen as a big moment for the Korean horror genre, especially as it broke “Gonjiam’s” record after 8 years. “Salmokji: Whispering Water” has also continued to stay strong at the box office through positive word of mouth, even while competing with major new releases such as “Super Mario Galaxy” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
With its steady theater run and growing audience count, many are now watching to see how far “Salmokji: Whispering Water” can go on the Korean horror movie rankings.
