MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama 'Perfect Crown' is getting mixed reactions as viewers discuss the way the romance between Byeon Woo Seok and IU is being filmed.
In episode 5, which aired on April 24, Grand Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo Seok, and Sung Hee Joo, played by IU, confirmed their feelings and ended the episode with a scene where they held hands during an event.
However, some viewers said the scene did not feel as romantic as expected. Many pointed to the camera angles and directing, saying the production did not make good use of the two actors’ height difference.
Before the drama aired, fans were excited about Byeon Woo Seok and IU’s pairing, especially because of their nearly 30 cm height difference.
In romance dramas, this kind of height gap is often seen as a charming point. But after the broadcast, some viewers felt it looked awkward in several full-body shots.

Netizens commented, “Because the angle did not consider the nearly 30 cm height difference, the affectionate scenes looked stiff and awkward,” while another said, “It looks like a father walking with his kindergarten daughter.”
Viewers also compared the drama to Byeon Woo Seok’s previous hit 'Lovely Runner'. Although Kim Hye Yoon also had a noticeable height difference with him, many felt the production used careful directing, camera work, heels, and positioning to make their scenes look more natural and romantic.
Because of this, some viewers believe the issue is not the actors’ chemistry, but the way the scenes are directed.
Netizens said, “The directing is killing the actors’ chemistry”, and “It would have felt much more exciting if the camera angles were better”.
As the romance continues, viewers are watching to see whether the production will improve the visual direction of Byeon Woo Seok and IU’s scenes.
