Actor Ahn Bo Hyun shared his candid thoughts on romantic comedy, saying he does not see himself as the typical fit for the genre.
On the 11th, the 37 year old actor held a round interview in Cheongdam dong, Seoul, following the conclusion of tvN’s Spring Fever. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “While playing Jae Gyu, I gained a little confidence in romantic comedy and became more open than before. But even now, romantic comedy is not easy for me. I sometimes think romantic comedy is a genre that should be done by someone very handsome.”
When asked directly if he believes his appearance does not suit romantic comedy, Ahn Bo Hyun calmly answered, “Yes.”

Spring Fever, based on a webtoon, tells the story of Yoon Bom (played by Lee Joo Bin) and Seon Jae Gyu (played by Ahn Bo Hyun). The drama ended on a strong note, recording its highest rating of 5.7 percent among paid households, according to Nielsen Korea. Ahn Bo Hyun received positive reviews for portraying Seon Jae Gyu as a sincere and straightforward character.
Although he has been known for intense roles in genre dramas such as My Name and Flex x Cop, this marked his return to romantic comedy about two and a half years after See You in My 19th Life. However, he clarified that he did not choose the project because it was a romantic comedy.
“The first thing that attracted me was the dialect,” he explained. “I consider dialect one of my strongest weapons. After reading the overall synopsis of Seon Jae Gyu, I wanted to challenge myself.”
He added that incorporating dialect into scripted dialogue was more difficult than he expected. “I thought it would be easy, but it was not. I had to make sure it did not go outside the context. I communicated a lot with the director.” According to Ahn Bo Hyun, the director encouraged him to add natural ad libs and speech tones, allowing him to create his own version of the character. “In the end, my own version of Jae Gyu was completed,” he shared.
Describing the character, he said, “He is serious and does not try to look cool on purpose. I think that makes him more attractive.”
Looking ahead, Ahn Bo Hyun expressed openness to trying romantic comedy again, but in his own way. “Instead of just showing coolness in a cool way, I want to twist it a little and express it differently. That could be my own style,” he said, adding, “If I get the chance, I definitely want to try again.”
