MAMAMOO’s Hwasa recently opened up about the intense challenges she faced before her official debut, sharing that she was almost removed from her agency.
On October 16, the YouTube channel Ddun Ddun uploaded a video featuring Hwasa. During the episode, when Jo Se Ho asked, “Which artists did you like at the time?”
Hwasa surprised viewers by saying, “Beyoncé and Rihanna. When I saw Rihanna shave her head, I shaved mine right away.”
She recalled the reaction from her agency, saying, “I got scolded a lot by the CEO at the time. I thought, ‘I have to do this,’ so I shaved it immediately.”
She added, “The CEO said, ‘You’ll debut soon, so you need to grow your hair,’ but I didn’t ask for permission, so I got in trouble. I was very free-spirited when I was young, so the CEO said, ‘You’re really amazing,’ and actually looked at me positively.”
Hwasa also revealed the concerns of the company’s executives: “All the company executives said I should be cut. I was too free-spirited. Would I ever be controllable later? And I didn’t even lose weight. I liked eating even then, so I ate everything while doing it.”
Despite the criticism, Hwasa shared that CEO Kim Do Hoon was the one who believed in her, saying, “He was the only one who trusted me. He said, ‘No, she’s going to play an important role later.’”
Her story highlighted the support that helped her overcome the early struggles in her career, leaving fans inspired by her honesty and determination.
