Actress Jun Ji Hyun is being praised for her grace and professionalism after being caught in controversy over her Disney+ drama “Polaris.”
The issue began when some Chinese netizens accused the drama of containing “anti-China” remarks after a line in episode 4 where Jun Ji Hyun’s character said, “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall near the border.”
Even though Disney+ is not available in China, clips of the series were illegally streamed, leading to online criticism and rumors that Jun Ji Hyun’s Chinese endorsements were affected.
In response, Polaris writer Jung Seo Kyung and director Kim Hee Won stepped forward to clarify the situation. Jung explained, “Even though the story is set in Korea, it takes place in a fictional world.
The names may sound familiar, but everything in it is fictional.” Director Kim added, “The actors understood our creative intent and portrayed it faithfully. I feel sorry the controversy affected them, but there was never any intention to offend anyone.”
Both praised Jun Ji Hyun for the way she handled the situation. Jung shared, “After the issue came up, we talked, and I was moved by how calm and considerate she was. She worried more about the staff and her fans than herself.”
Kim Hee Won agreed, saying, “She had no political intention, but she faced it with class. We always say Jun Ji Hyun has a big heart — and she truly does.”
Despite the controversy, Jun Ji Hyun stayed silent, focusing instead on her team and fans. Her quiet strength once again proved why she remains one of Korea’s most admired and enduring top stars.
