NewJeans has officially won a damages lawsuit against a YouTuber who made sexually harassing and malicious videos about the group.
According to Sisa Journal on August 11th, the Seoul Western District Court’s Civil Division 13 ruled partly in favor of NewJeans in the lawsuit they filed against the YouTuber, identified as “A”, on June 25.
The court ordered A to pay 5 million won each to Minji, Danielle, and Hanni, and 7 million won each to Haerin and Hyein, for emotional distress — a total of 29 million won. Since A did not appeal, the ruling was finalized on July 22.
In 2024, A ran two YouTube channels and was accused of making over 20 sexually harassing videos by editing NewJeans members’ stage performances and adding malicious comments.
Some of the comments included calling their song Cookie and making inappropriate remarks like, “I want to make her a mother of many children.”
ADOR, NewJeans’ agency, filed a criminal complaint against A in June last year and also pursued a damages claim of about 100 million won.
Fans are praising the group for standing up against malicious content, with many hoping the case will discourage further harassment of idols online.
