aespa's Winter opened up about her trainee days and shared a funny story about how her handsome older brother almost got cast instead of her!
On July 1, Winter appeared on the YouTube show Salon Drip 2, where she talked about her journey to joining SM Entertainment.
Winter shared, “I signed with SM in 2017 and trained for about 3 to 3 and a half years. I auditioned for SM about three times.” But her first audition had a twist.

“When I first went to the audition, an SM staff member actually tried to scout my older brother instead,” she revealed. “I thought, ‘Wait… wasn’t this supposed to be my audition?’” She laughed, adding, “I actually sang better than my brother, but he’s not bad either.”
But it wasn’t smooth sailing after that. Winter said, “I got cast at a dance festival but failed the audition. I even tried out at a global audition in Busan and didn’t make it. I auditioned for another company too.” Luckily, SM gave her one more shot. “They said, ‘Let’s try one more time.’ I really wanted to get in, so I went—and that time, I passed.”

She also talked about aespa’s latest track “Dirty Work,” saying, “We’re really happy with this comeback. The choreography took a long time to put together—we combined ideas from around 10 teams.”
Winter also mentioned aespa’s Kwangya training. “Even before debut, we had Kwangya classes that included the ae members (our AI selves). We’d just sit there watching them. Since it keeps changing, we still have to keep taking the classes.”
Fans loved Winter’s honesty and her fun story about her brother—proving once again that charm runs in the family!
