Actor Ryu Deok Hwan got real about what it was like working with Son Suk Ku, and fans are loving how honest he was!

On May 26, Ryu Deok Hwan sat down for an interview with Xports News at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, following the finale of JTBC’s drama Heavenly Ever After.

The drama tells the emotional story of a love that goes beyond life and death—featuring Kim Hye Ja as Hae Sook, who enters heaven as her 80-year-old self and meets her much younger husband Nak Joon, played by Son Suk Ku.

Ryu played a warm-hearted yet mysterious pastor, playing a key role in the storyline alongside the veteran actress.

During the interview, Ryu Deok Hwan opened up about his first experience working with Son Suk Ku—and how different it was from what he expected.

Ryu joked, “His playfulness is no joke,” while sticking out his tongue, adding with a laugh, “He’s not great at creating a serious mood on set,” showing his light-hearted affection for the actor.

Ryu shared that he first met Son Suk Ku at his café, which he opened after taking a break from acting post-marriage.

“He dropped by when he was filming The Outlaws 2, and he kept showing me clips he edited himself,” Ryu said. “I honestly thought, ‘This actor is a little strange.’”

But his thoughts quickly changed after seeing Son Suk Ku’s full performances. “After I watched more of his work, I was blown away. I thought, ‘Wow, a guy like this is acting in Korea now?’” he said, clearly impressed. “He acts in a way that just doesn’t feel possible.”

The two actors officially met again while filming Heavenly Ever After. Ryu confessed that Son Suk Ku wasn’t what he expected at all. “I thought he’d be serious and intense, but he was so light—like a feather,” he said with a smile.

Ryu also revealed that Son Suk Ku often shares viewer comments with him. “He always sends me compliments from viewers, saying it gives him energy,” Ryu laughed. “Of course, they’re all about how great his acting is.”

As both an actor and director, Ryu said Son Suk Ku is the kind of performer he truly admires. “I caught myself thinking, ‘I want to act like that too—just having fun,’” he admitted. “I want to work with actors who bring out their talent so naturally and comfortably.”

Meanwhile, Heavenly Ever After wrapped up its emotional run on May 25. Fans are already hoping these two talented actors reunite again in another project!
