The original author of The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call has nothing but praise for Ju Ji Hoon and Yoon Kyung Ho’s performances, saying they perfectly brought his characters to life.
On January 31, ENT specialist and writer Lee Nak Joon appeared on YTN News FM’s Wise Radio Life for a phone interview, where he shared his thoughts on the Netflix series based on his work.
Lee Nak Joon pointed out a standout moment from the drama featuring Chief Surgeon Han Yu Rim, played by Yoon Kyung Ho.
He revealed, "I actually wrote Han Yu Rim thinking he was similar to me. The scene where he repeatedly says, ‘I am Baek Kang Hyuk,’ as if he’s possessed while performing a procedure, was originally meant to be funny, but the drama made it even better."
When asked about viewers calling Han Yu Rim unexpectedly cute, Lee Nak Joon laughed and said, "In the original, his nickname was ‘Petite Yu Rim,’ so it makes sense! He’s an acting genius."
He went on to praise Yoon Kyung Ho’s professionalism, saying, "When I visited the filming set, he told me he enjoyed reading the novel, then suddenly delivered an intense crying scene. Between takes, he was all smiles, chatting and laughing, but once the cameras rolled, he went straight back into deep emotions. It was amazing to watch."
Lee Nak Joon also couldn’t stop praising Ju Ji Hoon’s portrayal of Baek Kang Hyuk, saying he was the perfect fit for the role.
"Compared to a novel, a comic has a higher resolution, and a video takes it even further. That means any awkwardness in the performance would be obvious. But Joo Ji Hoon’s Baek Kang Hyuk was exactly how I imagined him in my writing and comics," he explained.
The author even compared Ju Ji Hoon to a real-life webtoon character, saying, "I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role. He’s truly like a webtoon character come to life. And in person, he looks even more amazing."
With such high praise from the original creator, it’s clear that The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call has done a fantastic job bringing the story to life!
